Discovering Ur-Mu (Urban Museum) in Kuala Lumpur was such a refreshing experience! There were many things we love about it and since it has 5 floors, here's a highlight of the 5 things we love about our visit.

5. The Curated Space
Following the advise from a friendly Ur-Mu staff, we viewed the exhibition starting from Level 1, taking the stairs to reach the rooftop. The transition of each level is a thoughtful story with printed description as a guide. We feel that the ingenuity of Ur-Mu is its architectural experience, unique and encompassing of the livelihood of the residents around the area. By Level 3 you might think have figured the space out, yet another little detail would catch your attention to surprise you. We shall not spoil your visit with any photos on this "discovery".
4. Local & Regional Collection
We are jealous of the owners! To be able to collect pieces that represent certain voices and origins. Our art scene is desperately in need of more exposure to ASEAN and works from rest of Asia in a more permanent form, rather than short term art exhibition. This collection goes beyond the contemporary vibe of our local art scene to include works from neighbouring countries, in some instances it felt like we are experiencing glimpses of MOCA (Bangkok) and (SAM) Singapore simultaneously.
From Left: Azrin Mohd, Maggie Tan (MTMT) and numerous artists in a dedicated space.
There is a personal touch on how these works were being collected. We find it towards the themes of, respect for culture and diversity, a sense of humour about the times we live in, an eye for certain techniques and creation. A collection which engages our mind to make connection with the familiar and to absorbed or interpret the unfamiliar. As if you arrived and simply feel belonged in the conversation that the pieces are already engaged in, what a mood!
3. The RM10 Entry Fee
It is unusual to say that we like the entry fee. The truth is, we really REALLY do like it! It is only RM10/entry (probably the most affordable urban and contemporary museum we have ever paid for compared to what we pay in other countries). This sends a message of appreciation and importance that these collection, space and experiences are done by professionals which should be rewarded, preserved and maintained for future visits. Thus, with a minimal entry fee, it sustains, what we hope the longevity of local and regional art scene which can continue to thrive with the expansion of collection.

2. Serenity
Tell us someone who visits an art space but is not looking for serenity.... Ur-Mu despite it being located in the hustle bustle KL city, it is an opportunity to step into a space to be refreshed, contemplate, ponder and to be inspired. They have a structured entry time system as not to overcrowd the place thus providing the luxury of time to enjoy each of the collection in peace.
1. The Rooftop Garden
At the end of our visit, at the top of the building, we were pleasantly surprised by a dedicated Made's Garden, which was also a special tribute to a dear friend of Ur-Mu's founder. There are beautiful sculptural pieces along with plants, we sat there enjoying the extension of this greenery and contemplating how lucky we are to have been told about this place by Aza from The Art Seni before departing Malaysia.
With this top 5 points, we hope you enjoy your visit at Ur-Mu as much as we did!
